NASA’s Chief Information Officer, Patricia L. Dunnington, announced Tuesday, May 9, she is stepping down from that position at NASA Headquarters. Here is a portion of her announcement:
“It has been my honor and privilege to serve as the NASA Chief Information Officer. Over these past three years, we have realized significant accomplishments that benefit both NASA’s mission and management functions.
As we implement the Vision for Space Exploration, NASA has matured our Enterprise Architecture to provide a framework for aligning information technology investments with mission and management needs. A new NASA-wide area network architecture is in deployment, and centers have nearly completed local area network upgrades, resulting in improved network capacity and reliability. The NASA Portal has matured, and through creative partnerships with industry, has provided the high reliability, availability and performance required to deliver the record-setting public coverage of major mission events.
Internally, we have completed the initial step in sharing core services across centers and are executing the project to provide an agency-wide common messaging service which will enable the NASA workforce to efficiently work together. In addition, we are entering the pilot phase for the underlying infrastructure required to provide simplified password and identify management, and simplified sign-on services, via smart cards.
Finally, on the Electronic Government Initiatives of the President’s Management Agenda, together we have moved NASA from a “Red” score in 2003, and are successfully achieving our “Get-To-Green” metrics.
No one person can accomplish these things alone — it takes teamwork and partnership both internally and externally. I value those teams and partnerships that have brought multiple perspectives together in the best interest of this great agency.
Having accomplished the goals I set when I accepted the NASA CIO position, I feel this is the right time for me to move on to new challenges and opportunities in my career. I will continue serving in my position while a search is conducted to ensure a smooth transition.”
