Mountain View, CA, – The Mars Institute proudly announces the introduction of its new logo today as part of its ongoing strategy to position the institute as a leader in the effort to further the scientific study, exploration, and public understanding of Mars.

The new logo’s primary elements consist of:

  • The Sun, Earth and Mars.
  • A transfer orbit.
  • An astronaut helmet with visor plate.
  • The sun reflecting off the visor.
  • The Mars Institute name.

The elements that form the logo symbolize the institute’s vision of Mars exploration and its pursuit of research that
includes not just scientific studies of Mars itself, but also of how to get there and of how studies on Earth, in
analog environments, can help understand Mars and its exploration. In addition the Mars Institute supports ongoing
robotic exploration of Mars and is supportive of the human exploration of Mars.

“Our new logo shows our commitment to the ideals we set forth when we founded the Mars Institute,” said Marc Boucher,
the Mars Institute’s CEO. “We are committed to the long term scientific study of Mars and we envision playing a
prominent role in advancing and implementing the exploration of Mars.”

Becky Brown of the award winning design firm Lunar Design of Palo Alto, California, designed the logo concept based on
some initial drawings and input provided by institute members Pascal Lee and Marc Boucher. Lunar also implemented the
logo across a range of business communications, including letterhead and business cards, used by the institute.

After learning of the Mars Institute and its goals, Lunar generously donated its time and services to this project. “We’ve
always enjoyed the challenge of taking a celestial body and using it to communicate an organization’s brand,” said
Brown. “We feel that the Mars Institute is forward-thinking in the area of Mars exploration, and we’re quite pleased to
have been members of their design team.”
