Roy W. Malone Jr. has been named deputy directory of the Safety and
Mission Assurance Office at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center
in Huntsville, Ala.
In his new position, Malone will have a key management role in the
safety, reliability, maintainability and quality activities on all
Marshall Center programs, while sharing other broad-range
responsibilities that support the U.S. space program.
Malone joined the Marshall Center in 1994, after working for PRC Inc.,
as senior quality engineer on the Safety and Mission Assurance support
contract. He served as technical advisor in the Space Shuttle
Integration Office and in 1997 he became audit manager of
Marshall’s Internal Quality Audit System. In 1998, Malone was
promoted to manager of the Logistics Services Department in the Center
Operations Directorate, where he was responsible for planning and
directing logistics, technical and institutional support for
Marshall’s research, development and program management
activities.
Prior to his civilian career, Malone was on active duty with the U.S.
Navy for 11 years, serving in operation Desert Storm as Combat Systems
Officer aboard the destroyer USS Caron. Additionally, he served two
years in the office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and in the Office of
the Chief of Naval Operations at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.
A native of Virginia Beach, Va., Malone grew up in a naval family. He
earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the
Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Ga. He has completed the
Program for Management Development from the Harvard Business School in
Cambridge, Mass. Malone and his wife June, also a Marshall Center
employee, reside in Huntsville with their two children Wil and
Madison.
