Global supercomputer
leader Cray Inc. today announced that it has
received a $3.3 million order for a Cray SV1ex(TM) supercomputer
system and related services from Government Micro Resources (GMR).
The subcontract with GMR calls for a 32-processor Cray SV1ex
supercomputer to be installed in the second quarter 2001 at the NASA
Ames Research Center facility in Moffett Field, Calif. The system will
support research aimed at improving the safety and durability of
aircraft and aerospace vehicles.
NASA Ames will run computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and
structural applications on its Cray SV1ex supercomputer to model the
aerodynamic and thermodynamic properties of airplanes, helicopters and
second-generation spacecraft, such as the X-38 space station lifeboat
vehicle. These models help researchers pinpoint areas of structural
stress and air friction, leading to safer, more efficient vehicle
designs. The Cray system also will support NASA Ames’ study of air
turbulence, microgravity and propulsion for airplanes and space
shuttles.
The Cray SV1ex supercomputer will replace an existing Cray C90(TM)
supercomputer.

four.”
