The following documents the discussions addressed at the Senior Staff and
Center Directors’ Meeting on April 24, 2000. Mr. Goldin did not attend the
meeting. Action assignments have been placed in brackets [ ] for easy
identification.

1. AA Reports

B/Holz: Mr. Holz reported that the Chief Financial Officer’s are having
their annual conference at GRC for 2 days.

Q/Greenfield: Dr. Greenfield reported that the Continual Improvement &
Reinvention Conference is being held this week.

M/Poniatowski: Ms. Poniatowski reported that STS-101 is on schedule for
launch today at 4:15 p.m. EDT with a 5-minute launch window, 60-percent
probability of no go for crosswinds violation, 80 percent for 24-hour
scrub, and 10 percent for 48-hour scrub. (Note: Launch did not occur.
Next attempt is scheduled for May 18, 2000.)

Y/Asrar: Dr. Asrar reported that the first Terra early results press
conference was held at NASA Headquarters on Thursday, April 20. NASA
released one terrabyte of data on the same day to the users via the
Internet. Over 2 million users have visited the Terra Website, and USA
Today declared the Terra Website as pick of the week for content and utility.

R/Reck: Mr. Reck reported that Mr. Venneri is at ARC. Congressman Steve
Horn (R-CA) is holding a series of hearings on emerging technologies.

AS/Olsen: Dr. Olsen reported that the NASA Science Council is scheduled to
meet on April 25, 2000, from 1 to 3 p.m. in room 9H40. The subjects of
discussion are the Earth Science research program near- and long-term
plans. Dr. Jack Kaye, Director of the Research Division of the Office of
Earth Science, will present the near-term plan for scientific research for
the Enterprise. His presentation will include questions, prioritization
criteria, and examples of active programs. Dr. Mark Schoeberl from GSFC
will present the Enterprise plans for the years beyond 2010, going out to
2025.

C/Christensen: Mr. Christensen reported that Melanoma Monday is May 1.
The Health Unit will be open to the press for a short time and Dr. Mulville
and Mr. Readdy will be available for pictures.

S/Weiler: Dr. Weiler reported that 10 years ago today, Hubble Space
Telescope (HST) was launched.

AE/Hudkins: Mr. Hudkins thanked the Centers for their support on the NASA
Integrated Action Team (NIAT) in responding to the four reports.

2. AI/Dr. Mulville

Dr. Mulville reported on the following: 1) The 17th Annual Secretarial &
Clerical Awards Luncheon will be held at Ft. McNair this Wednesday at 11:30
a.m. 2) The 15th Annual Continual Improvement & Reinvention Conference
will be held at the Hilton in Alexandria, VA, on Thursday, April 27.

3. Center Reports

ARC/McDonald: Dr. McDonald reported that ARC is providing a live Webcast
of “Emerging Technologies: Where is the Federal Government on the
High-Tech Curve?” discussions to be held during a public hearing before
Members of the U.S. House of Representatives Subcommittee on Government
Management, Information, and Technology, chaired by Congressman Steve Horn
(R-CA).

GRC/Campbell: Mr. Campbell reported on the following: 1) A new ceramic
powder processing facility at GRC makes possible the fabrication of powder
compositions, with optimized particle-size distributions, important to
obtaining the microstructure and properties that are key to top Thermal
Barrier Coating (TBC) performance. 2) Pratt & Whitney and General Electric
Aircraft Engines announced that they will use the Numerical Propulsion
System Simulation Version 1 for engine modeling in the development program.
This is a joint venture, which is called Alliance, to provide a U.S.
engine for the Airbus A3XX and Boeing 747 new large aircraft. The use of a
single, modular engine modeling system will greatly enhance productivity as
the two companies integrate each other’s component and subsystem designs
into a single engine configuration. This version was completed and
distributed to industry and Government partners in March 2000, meeting a
major milestone in High Performance Computing and Communications Program.
3) On April 3, 2000, a meeting was held with Northrop Grumman
representatives at LaRC to review two Department of Defense (DOD)
studies-the DOD Future Strike Aircraft and the Next Generation Bomber
Studies. These studies looked at improved versions of the B-2 as well as
all new vehicles.

GSFC/Diaz: Mr. Diaz thanked everyone for making Earth Awareness Week a
success.

JSC/Parsons: Mr. Parsons reported on the following: 1) Everything for
the launch is going well. 2) The Center will hold its HST celebration
tomorrow, April 25.

KSC/Bridges: Mr. Bridges reported that things are going well for the
launch.

MSFC/Saucier: Mr. Saucier reported on the following: 1) The Center had an
excellent visit on Thursday by Mr. Rothenberg. 2) Congresswoman Sheila
Jackson Lee (D-TX) visited the Center on Friday.

SSC/Brannon: Mr. Brannon reported that last week, the Space Shuttle Main
Engine completed the 15th and 16th test of the remaining 22 test
certification series of the modified Pratt fuel turbopump S/N 13. On
Wednesday, April 26 (post-Shuttle launch), they will perform the 17th test.
