The U.S. Air Force has awarded BAE Systems Aerospace Services of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., a three-year contract extension to maintain radars used for missile warning and space surveillance, according to a Feb. 24 press release from the company.
BAE has maintained the radars since 2007 and the extension brings the cumulative value of the contract to about $540 million, the company said in the release. The extension covers 2016-2018, said Neil Franz, a spokesman for the company.
BAE did not disclose the value of the contract extension. However, BAE has received contract modifications of about $48 million for annual extensions in each of the past two years.
The BAE-maintained Solid State Phased Array Radar System (SSPARS) tracks more than 16,000 objects and makes as many as 40,000 observations daily. The radars are located at Cape Cod Air Force Station, Mass.; Beale Air Force Base, Calif.; Clear Air Force Station, Alaska; Thule Air Base, Greenland; and the Royal Air Force Fylingdales facility in the United Kingdom.
“The contract extension builds on our strong and successful track record in support of Air Force Space Command,” Tom White, senior director of mission support solutions at BAE Systems, said in the release. “This program is a critical part of national defense, and our role ensures that our customer is always ready.”
