The 18th symposium organized by GRETSI1, the signal and image processing research and
studies group, will be held at the Centre de Congrès Pierre Baudis in Toulouse, from 10 to 13
September 2001. After Grenoble and Vannes, Toulouse was the logical choice as host city for
this year’s event given the importance of the aerospace sector in the Midi-Pyrénées region of
south-west France, where signal and image processing research receives constant support and
encouragement from stakeholders in government and industry.

GRETSI’01 expects to welcome 500 French or French-speaking delegates. The symposium is
being organized by the Centre National d’Etudes Spatiales (CNES) in collaboration with Alcatel
Space Industries, Rockwell Collins France, Airbus France, Astrium, the French air navigation
technical department STNA, the French aerospace research agency ONERA CERT, the
Midi-Pyrénées Regional Council, the Conseil Général de la Haute-Garonne, the City of Toulouse,
the Ministry of Research and Technology, and Isis at CNRS, the French national scientific
research centre.

The GRETSI symposium is the oldest event of its kind. For more than three decades, every two
years it has brought together French specialists and their foreign counterparts working in signal
and image processing. It was held for 16 years in the Alpes-Maritimes region in south-east
France before becoming itinerant in 1997. The GRETSI symposium is thus a landmark event for
the signal and image processing research community that provides an eagerly awaited
opportunity for researchers and industrial firms involved in this field of research to meet and
exchange views.
