Southern Convention Services
(SCS), announced today that it has partnered with the U.S. Space & Rocket
Center to design the new shuttle exhibit unveiling Saturday, April 12 at 10:00
a.m. at the center.
The latest permanent exhibit at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center, STS: The
History of the Space Transportation System, seeks to explain how the RLV
(Reusable Launch Vehicle) came into being, and the pivotal role Huntsville
played in its design and development.
SCS designed and produced 40 graphics for the exhibit including text,
photographs and descriptions of various parts of the space shuttle. The
exhibit, which covers 1300 square feet, also includes an impressive 10-foot
tall hanging directional sign with back lighting.
“There were many one-of-a-kind items created for this project. We
produced a walled system which incorporates display cases and interactive
features. The exhibit starts with early wind tunnel test models and ends with
current everyday products that were direct scientific spin offs of the space
program like WD40. The incorporated display cases are inset with the walls
and hold spacesuits and artifacts pertaining to life in space. The design
also incorporates a shuttle portal in the wall with a view looking into the
interior of the shuttle. The exhibit maintains a consistent look through the
use of laminates, graphics, and mounting hardware. Interactive features were
designed for a “spacey industrial look,” which is also used at the U.S. Space
& Rocket Center’s bookstore where two Point of Purchase displays sell the
software used in an interactive kiosk of the exhibit,” said Michael Hayes,
Exhibit Designer, SCS.
U.S. Space & Rocket Center Curator Irene Willhite said, “I think this will
be one of the more popular exhibits we’ve had in quite some time. It has
something for everyone.” Willhite says younger visitors will enjoy the hands-
on aspects of the exhibit, including a computer-operated shuttle assembly
program and Remote Manipulator Arm control program, while historians should
appreciate the displays including original flight suits and one of the first
actual Manned Maneuvering Units that flew on the inaugural flight of Columbia.
