Each year, from Oct. 4–10, space enthusiasts from around the globe gather to celebrate World Space Week. Now in its 19th year, the occasion is celebrated internationally to draw attention to the benefits of space exploration and honor the contributions it has made to our lives on Earth. In addition to celebrating World Space Week, the Space Foundation will also be celebrating seven years of providing interactive space exploration exhibits and STEM education activities to the community at its Space Foundation Discovery Center in Colorado Springs.

On Saturday, Oct. 5, the Space Foundation Discovery Center will celebrate both events with free admission for all visitors. Admission includes access to the Mars Robotics Laboratory and the opening of an exciting new exhibit entitled “Tech Style.” This interactive exhibit explores the evolution of the spacesuit as a technological marvel that must also function as a practical piece of clothing. Guests will see spacesuits from around the world and experience what it’s like to handle tools while on a simulated spacewalk.

Guests can also participate in a Postcrossing activity, where they’ll create and mail an original postcard that will be delivered to a random person in the world, and later receive a postcard back from another random participant. Postcard stamps will be available for purchase at the Discovery Center front desk.

The Space Foundation will also be celebrating World Space Week from its Washington, D.C., office by hosting a reception at the Canadian Embassy on Tuesday, Oct. 8. The reception will showcase artwork submitted from Canada to the Space Foundation’s Annual International Student Art Contest. Now in its 10th year, the contest has received thousands of entries from around the world. The 2020 contest, with the theme “How Exploring Space Improves Life on Earth,” is co-sponsored by Earth Observing System, and entries are due no later than Nov. 18, 2019.

On Oct. 9, the Space Foundation education team will be at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs for a special World Space Week presentation, Audience with an Astronaut. Although the event is not open to the public, it will give students of Space Foundation Teacher Liaisons an opportunity to hear a presentation from former NASA astronaut Duane “Digger” Carey.

Additional Audience with an Astronaut programs will be hosted at the Discovery Center throughout the school year. Local educators are encouraged to apply for a field trip scholarship and an opportunity for their students to hear from an astronaut. Apply now at https://www.discoverspace.org/education/scholarships.
