Astrosat, the ambitious space services and management company, has continued on its stellar award-winning trajectory by beating off stiff competition to win another major European prize.
The Edinburgh-based company, which specialises in innovative space technology, won the 2015 Copernicus Masters Smart Cities and Intelligent Transport Challenge, sponsored by Satellite Applications Catapult, for its eXude flood monitoring application.
Astrosat took the prize at a prestigious ceremony in Berlin for Europe’s major innovation competition for space applications, attended by high-ranking representatives from industry, institutions and research.
The eXude system provides an advanced flood-monitoring tool that makes use of the latest in SAR and radar altimetry data-processing techniques for flood identification and mapping, including urban areas.
Coupled with the ability to receive additional data sets, the system will provide information on drainage capabilities and hazard assessment or infrastructure failures within flood management infrastructures, both during events and in post-event analysis.
It is the sixth major award that Astrosat, which merges satellite and ground-based data to provide valuable information to a wide range of sectors, has won in the four years since it was established.
Last year it was awarded the Copernicus Masters transport and logistics prize for its Transport Sentry application, which uses synthetic aperture radar and optical satellites to examine road and rail links.
Steve Lee, founder and CEO of Astrosat said: “The Copernicus Masters brings together innovative challengers to provide solutions for business and society based on Earth observation data and we are delighted to have been awarded this new accolade.”
Astrosat’s fast growing team of highly accomplished engineers has helped to transform the way space-based information can be used to bring previously unattainable benefits to energy, transport and aquaculture enterprises.
