The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) will hold its 2019 Aviation and Aeronautics Forum and Exposition (AIAA AVIATION Forum) 17-21 June at the Hilton Anatole in Dallas, Texas.

Throughout the week leaders from industry, academia, and government will discuss how rapidly changing technology, new entrants, and emerging trends are shaping the future of flight.

“Hypersonics, air mobility, and autonomy are transforming aeronautics today,” said Dan Dumbacher, AIAA executive director. “At the AIAA AVIATION Forum, we bring together the experts to parse hype from reality. It’s a week of spirited discussions and new connections. We hope you’ll join us.”

Plenary sessions will offer high-level insight, while Forum 360 sessions will be more in depth. There will be 20 discussion tracks, more than 1,100 technical presentations and about 230 technical sessions.

A different area will be addressed each day, although the Shaping the Future of Flight theme will run throughout the forum. For example, Monday is focused on flying higher, further, faster with global transportation and hypersonics; Tuesday on NASA aeronautics; Wednesday on vertical lift; Thursday on future of urban mobility and autonomy; and Friday on technology readiness.

Highlights include:

  • NASA Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate (ARMD) discussion on supersonics and urban mobility
  • Hypersonics—current research, concepts and technical challenges
  • Jim Hansen, author of biography-turned-movie First Man, and NASA Chief Historian Bill Barry will discuss Apollo and its impact on modern flight and aeronautics on Friday, 21 June
  • NASA University Leadership Initiative (ULI) research update
  • How point-to-point mobility is providing more transportation options for travelers today
  • Airbus Helicopter’s President Chris Emerson on how developments in vertical lift are expanding the envelope of possibilities
  • Transformative Flight focus on automation with the leading experts
  • Greg Hyslop, Boeing’s CTO on the future of mobility and how it is changing our world.

In addition, Justin Paines, chief test pilot at Joby Aviation and former Royal Air Force pilot, will give the 2019 Wright Brothers Lecture in Aeronautics, “Turning Flight Control on its Head for the F-35, eVTOL, and Beyond” on 17 June.

Also, 12 aerospace professionals will be recognized for their outstanding contributions in their field, having been chosen by their peers from related AIAA technical committees.
