China launched the Tianhui-1 Earth-mapping satellite Aug. 24 on a Long March 2D rocket from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center, according to the Chinese state-run news agency Xinhua.

The satellite was developed by the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corp. and will be used to conduct scientific experiments, map the Earth and carry out land resource surveys, Xinhua reported.
