Brian Berger

Editor in Chief

Brian Berger is SpaceNews editor in chief, responsible for all SpaceNews editorial products, including SpaceNews.com and the biweekly magazine.

He joined SpaceNews in 1998, spending his first decade with the publication covering NASA. His reporting on the 2003 Space Shuttle Columbia accident was recognized with an Online News Association award for breaking news.

He was named senior staff writer in 2004, a position he held until becoming SpaceNews deputy editor in 2008. 

Brian earned a bachelor's degree in magazine production and editing from Ohio University's E.W. Scripps School of Journalism, where he was active in student government. 

He is always interested in hearing your ideas for making SpaceNews and SpaceNews.com better.

Jeff Foust writes about space policy, commercial space, and related topics for SpaceNews.

He earned a Ph.D. in planetary sciences from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a bachelor’s degree with honors in geophysics and planetary science from the California Institute of Technology.

Caleb Henry is a SpaceNews staff writer covering satellites, telecom and launch. He previously worked for Via Satellite and NewSpace Global.

He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science along with a minor in Astronomy from Grove City College.

Phillip Swarts

Phillip Swarts

Phillip Swarts is the military space reporter for SpaceNews. He previously covered space and advanced technology for Air Force Times, the Justice Department for The Washington Times, and investigative journalism for the Washington Guardian; and was part of the team that won the Breaking News Coverage award from the Virginia Press Association for reporting on the Navy Yard shooting in 2013.

Phillip received both his master’s and bachelor’s degrees from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University. He has made appearances on CSPAN and Sinclair Broadcasting Group news programs, the Andy Park radio show, and his work has appeared in USA Today and McClatchy papers. Phillip has been writing for a newspaper since he joined the staff of “The Edge,” his middle school paper in the 7th grade.

Art Director

Lance H. Marburger is the art director for SpaceNews. He is responsible for the day-to-day production of the publication and provides support for SpaceNews.com and marketing materials.
His responsibilities also include overseeing page design, producing informational graphics, illustrations, photography and prepress of all materials prior to print.

He earned a bachelor’s of fine arts degree with honors in graphic design and communication from Pratt Institute School of Design in Brooklyn, New York.

A graduate of the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism, where he won the Horgan Prize for Excellence in Science Writing, Paul Kallender-Umezu is co-author of “In Defense of Japan: From the Market to the Military in Space Policy” (Stanford University Press, 2010). He is an associate researcher at the Global Security Research Institute and a doctoral candidate at Keio University, where he studies space and cybersecurity policy transition. He has been contributing to SpaceNews for nearly 20 years.

He is the 2010 winner of the prestigious National Space Club Press Award and recently co-authored with Apollo 11’s Buzz Aldrin the book “Mission to Mars — My Vision for Space Exploration,” published by the National Geographic Society.

Greg Thomas is a co-owner of SpaceNews. He is based in the company’s Alexandria, Virginia office. Greg is also a member of SpaceNews’ Board of Directors. Greg's experience spans both print and digital businesses.

Before joining SpaceNews, he served as COO of Inside Communciations, a sports publishing company based in Boulder, Colorado. During Greg’s tenure at Inside Communications, he was responsible for leading the company through a digital transformation and was instrumental in leading the company to profitability and growth. Previously Greg served in a number of roles for Quokka Sports, Interval Research Corporation, and Apple Computer.

Paige McCullough is the business development director for SpaceNews.
She comes to SpaceNews from a corporate communications position within the commercial launch industry.
She holds a bachelor’s degree in marketing from Virginia Tech’s Pamplin College of Business.

Tony Kingham is the sales representative for SpaceNews in Europe (excluding France, Italy and Spain) and all international business outside the Americas.
He has represented SpaceNews in Europe for more than 14 years.
He has worked within the space, defense and security markets for more than 25 years, is the publisher of a number of online directory products as well as organizer of specialist conferences and expos.

Emmanuel Archambeaud

Advertising Representative for France, Italy, Spain

Emmanuel Archambeaud is working in the SpaceNews team since February 1991 and is the manager of advertising sales in European countries like France, Italy, and Spain. He is responsible for business development for major accounts at SpaceNews and SpaceNews.com.
Following attendance at University of La Sorbonne in Paris with a master’s degree, he worked as a key account manager in an advertising agency becoming partner of the advertising agency before joining his actual company. Based in Paris, Emmanuel always worked with experienced media spanning both print and digital businesses.

Pam Washburn is the accounting assistant for SpaceNews. She applies payments and sends customer invoices and statements. She interacts with customers or their agencies to assist as needed, and for collection purposes.
She has worked in the accounting field for 42 years.
